Just amazing that this is his first novel. It did feel a little looser than some of his others, but his full command of the fantastical is on display here. And the twist, when it comes (and you know something is coming) is so jaw-dropping, but also setup so incredibly well that it flows right around your astonishment into a brilliant ending. Never wanted it to end.

Oh man, this book has literally everything: friendship, ninjas, politics, romance, mimes, pirates, a war, confusing sci fiction themes that end up making sense by the end, side plots, main plots, and lots of humor!

A true masterpiece that I can see myself re-reading because I’m sure I’ll get even more out of it the second time around.

He does such a great job of weaving ridiculous storylines with a deep analysis on the world and what it means to be human. Highly recommended

Combine the style and optimism of [a:P.G. Wodehouse|7963|P.G. Wodehouse|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1198684105p2/7963.jpg] with the scope and digressions of Russian literature, add some absurdist sci-fi in the vein of [b:John Dies at the End|1857440|John Dies at the End (John Dies at the End, #1)|David Wong|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1189289716s/1857440.jpg|1858059], and you'll arrive at The Gone-Away World.

Oh dear. I made it to two thirds and then I wanted to throw it in the bin. I didn't. I continued reading. It got a little better. I got to 90% and threw it in the bin. There is a lot of good in this book but there is so much horrible around it that I feel like it's wasting my time.
I like: the humour, the idea of the pipeline and it's consequences. Some characters.
I hate: the slow parts where everything gets very confusing and it takes a lot of time to get out the other end.

Most of my experience reading this was: what the f*** is happening? The only reason I did not give up on this book was because my fiance says he enjoyed it (turns out he didn't actually read all of it, but that's against the point), I'm glad I didn't put it down though. I got extremely into it about 3/4 the way in, really trying to wrap my mind around what in the world is going on here and how? Ending left me wanting, but hey what can you do?
