I just actually re-read this one a few months ago. It didn't really hold up, but I still think incest in a YA book is pretty awesome.

This felt like two half books stitched together. I was totally with the first half of the book and the titular scavenger hunt. We pretty much get thrown straight into it and I enjoyed jumping between our main two teams and following them along on the hunt but then around halfway this book completely changes direction and does so significantly for the worse. The second half of this book is straight up nonsense, so much so that I considered giving this one star despite quite enjoying it early on.

A fun, nostalgic pool read.

Could not put it down during the middle and end parts. Christopher Pike writes a damn good horror sci-fi novel with Scavenger Hunt. Without spoiling too much the answers are not what you think they will be. Some aspects were hella predictable but ultimately I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns. One of the best Pike books I have ever read, and one that I will have to revisit again cause I think it is gonna become one of my new favorites to reread! Tehn out of Ten would reccomend.

So here's the thing. This is the quintessential Christopher Pike "BOOM IT WAS SECRET LIZARDS ALL ALONG" book. But also, I have 2 degrees in English and cannot tell you how this book works or what actually happens. Dinosaur people and some kind of liminal feywild-esque space...in a cave? There's a skeleton but also the guy has been walking around being menacing for quite some time...in a different body? Where did that body come from? Tequila saves the day? Some reeeeeeal troubling ableism, also, big yikes. But also?! This remains legitimately pretty creepy! It's a rich tapestry is what I'm saying.
