Although full of very entertaining and interesting characters and happenings, I had a hard time getting hooked on this tale. But once hooked it was a fun ride. Peopled with creatures that reminded me of an amalgamation of the beasts of Piers Anthony and Terry Pratchett it has the same childhood charm as the Harry Potter books.

This is, hands down, one of the best wizard series ever written

I enjoyed this very much. Sage managed to combine the child-like perspective without condescending to child-like writing. Very refreshing. The plotline itself is a bit tired albeit set in a unique world with its own unique myth. I'm anxious to discover what happens next.

A really great book about magyk, friendship and family!
I think, the plotttwist with Boy 142 aka Septimus was really well written and I suspected nothing. I am excited to read the next one

I first read this as a wee 10 year old, and decided to revisit it now 18 years later. This holds up! Lovable cast of characters and unique enough to keep surprising you. Solid fantasy for the young and the old!
