an aimless slog that’s so aggressively cliche i suspect it was dated even @ the time of publication:(

As with most sets of short stories to me, a number of these just felt unresolved when they ended. Between that and that I really despised some of the characters, which made those stories unenjoyable, it was just ok to me.

I read this book over the summer, and most of what I can remember is that the stories blended together and were a tad repetitive. I liked each story individually, but the messages seemed to collide with one another. I understand the author wished to educate her audience on certain matters, but I usually found myself confused as to what was actually trying to be accomplished with each story.

I had to read this for a humanities class this semester and I enjoyed some stories more than others. Some stories I just absolutely hated. Even discussing each of these stories made me realize how much I just didn't really remember some of these stories. Just felt like a blur to be completely honest. Not a book I would pick up on my own.

I found the endless descriptions of skin color distracting. I realize that all of the stories dealt with race in some way, but until the last two stories, I felt the descriptions and even race had little to do with the appeal of the stories. Only when I got to the last two stories did the racial aspects of the narrative felt organic.

I try to find something to say about everything I read, but there is nothing that comes to mind. It wasn’t very bad and it wasn’t outstanding. There was nothing obnoxious or memorable. I wish I could remember why I added it to my queue because I love to go back and read the compelling review that motivated me, but I can’t recall where/who it was.

It is a bummer that she started off the collection with the weakest story in the book (the ending of it was so badly written, and it was wholly unbelievable). It left me with a sour taste moving forward. While the quality of the stories did get better by the end, it was not a great collection overall.
