If you are going to read this series I suggest read the novella. When this book started I was so confused. It literally starts right where the novella ends. The book eventually makes sense. It actually bothers me a lot when authors do this. I rarely read novellas. If a novella is meant to be a huge chunk or in the case the beginning of the storyline the. Just make it book 1.

If I didn’t have the audiobook for book 2 already, I would have put this series away... not because it wasn’t good because it was pretty good.. but because I am so annoyed that I didn’t know there was a novella until after this book.

This book picks up right where the last one left off.

And we finally find out a bit more about the curious Vamp Guard that keeps assisting Onyx when she is in peril.

I will say, this novel does have a lot of action, but also a lot of Onyx thinking to herself about what her next steps should be.

The action within these pages was very gripping. The PE class...when you read it, you'll know.

Last review I was stating that I was hoping that Peony would have a redeeming arc of some kind. But I was actually very pleased to see that it was Virgie that was more prominent within this novel and more of personality really shone through.

While this series seems to be tackling topics that are darker, the one class with Ms. Rutherford had me just aghast. When you read it you'll know as well. She is cruel and clever.

The reader finds out more about Onyx and her powers. It is making me very excited to maybe find out who her father is.

I am excited to jump into the next novel knowing that Onyx is now playing the game. The ending of this novel had me misty with the actions that took place. Single tears were dropping, and I was happy and sad about what transpired.

Onyx is a very likeable character. She is flawed, she isn't perfect. The way that she treats Lily when she first meets her is terrible but also understandable after what happened with Blair. Onyx really is kickass.

Now I need to know what the Vamp Guard will do next, since the book ended on uncertain terms as far as his possible alliance with Onyx. Will the girls be able to stick together and make it out alive-- I really hope so.

This series is freaking good, and addicting. I can't wait to start the next book tomorrow.

What a thrill ride Cruel Elites is. We open with Onyx standing over a dead Vampire ho tried to rape her. and being the one who killed him has dire consequences if she is caught. Which she is but she is in luck because the guard Thorsten helps her get rid of the body. Trapped in a school where you have to score high to be able to make your own fate Onyx is determined to be one out of 100 that can go their own way. She doesn't want to be a Vamps Slave or Courtesen. Will make it through her Placement Trials with the help of a vampire and friends she just might

I received a free audiobook from the author and the review group Audiobx in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

At Nocturnal Academy, the Fae students are ruled by the Vampire elite. Fae students go through their classes and learn vampire history, and how to serve the vampires. At the end of the semester, they're put through a series of tests that determines their major of study. Three options are left for them: servants, magical entertainment or courtesan. Onyx is slated for the courtesan track, but she refuses to become a blood or sex slave for the vampires. Her only bet is to best everyone in the tests and win independent study. But after accidentally killing a fae prince and awakening her frost magic, Onyx has several things to hide and the local mean girl Peony knows one of her secrets.

This was kind of a depressing world? Like there really isn't much hope for the fae unless they have plant magic. Onyx also constantly alludes to danger if her frost magic is exposed, but we never quite find out why exactly having this type of magic is dangerous. I don't know if there even are consequences for frost magic so I wish that had been explained more.

Onyx was also really rude to her roommate in order to protect her and it really threw me off. Sure Onyx was targeted for bullying from the other students, but it never seemed to extend to Lily just because she was friends with Onyx. Onyx's fears are based on what happened to her ex-roommate, but that seemed like a completely different situation to me.

I did enjoy Onyx's character. She was really headstrong and determined which I liked. Her relationship, if you can even call it that, with Thorsten was fascinating. He would act like a decent vampire one scene, but then say the most scathing things to her and wow I cannot figure him out for my life. But I am seriously fascinated.

Overall, I have a lot of questions about the world and some of Onyx's motivations, but I'm curious to see what she'll do next.
