Okay, I get while people like Terry Pratchett.

I've tried to get into the Discworld books previously (Wee Free Men, specifically) but it just didn't click. Maybe it's that I'm older, or magic and gender roles are just more my speed, but I really enjoyed this book! The fact that the version I read had no chapters and was just one large block of uninterrupted story did make it a bit harder to get through, but this is the first time I felt like I appreciated Pratchett's sense of humor, and there's a quaint, offbeat, cozy sort of style to this story that reminds me of Dianna Wynne Jones.

It was really interesting to read a 1980s take on gender roles, and I think it would be fun to compare this book with more modern "feminist" fantasies - frankly, I think Equal Rites probably wouldn't feel too antiquated compared to some of what's written today. I think as a young child I would have really related to the character of Esk, and it's not surprising to learn Pratchett based her off his own daughter. You definitely get the sense this story was heavily influenced by some very smart women in the authors actual life.

While I wouldn't say this has converted me to being a die-hard Pratchett fan, I do feel curious to read more Discworld after this book, which I consider a win.

I LOVE these characters. Certainly not the best Witches story, but absolutely the first. These three characters are drawn with so much love and knowledge and respect and thought. When it comes to representation and respect, Pratchett is really among the best.
