This is a really interesting collection, and I'm glad I got to read it. Before his untimely passing, American-Finnish writer James Thompson assembled a fascinating group of noir stories set in Finland, specifically Helsinki, even contributing a story of his own. This is just one of many collections in the Akashic noir series.

These are grim stories to be sure. I wouldn't want to have a steady diet of this material (though given my wide tastes and interests, I hate to focus on ANY one genre). Still things get pretty heavy and bleak, even though there are a few light, or even humorous, moments.

There are fourteen stories here, told from various points of view. Some stories are more successful than others, in my opinion, but all were worth a read (and a re-read). Overall, I found the reading experience to be a quick and easy one. The story I had the most trouble getting into was the first one. Once I got used to that narrator, things went a lot smoother. I recently bought several more Akashic volumes, and I'm looking forward to checking them out.

I received a copy of Helsinki Noir, for free, through the Goodreads First Reads program.

Definitely stronger in its first half - this is a pretty dark cup of coffee.
