It felt so disconnected. Time would pass without any indication. I wasn’t drawn to any characters. Really wanted to finish but it wasn’t worth my time.

A surprising 5 star read. The writing was realistic and compelling, and while not entirely relatable, told in a way to make it seem so. An emotional examination of what it means to be a mother.

Disappointing. Shallow characters involved in unbelievable relationships. Self-conscious writing. We get it. You know how to use big words.

What an interesting book! So many layers to unpack with the complicated relationships between all the characters and the questionable choices they all made. Would really make a great book club book. So much to discuss with this one! I enjoyed it and would recommend. Complex issues of motherhood and race and maybe a little over optimistic about a future world where such things will matter less.

This book reeks of self righteousness and white savior. There doesn’t seem to be a plot, it just drags on. My favorite parts were when the narrator got put in her place, although it was at the expense of the black characters. And what’s with the obsession with princess Diana? I expected this to have been written by a white woman, not a black man

The story was interesting from an entertainment perspective, but also thought-provoking from a self-examination approach. After Leave the World Behind, I'm really growing to really love this author.

I enjoyed this novel while reading it but I kept waiting for something big to happen to make the main character face reality. The entire novel was told from her self centered, self focused point of view. I ended up frustrated with her but she is a true to life character and I know many people like her that are incapable of seeing life from anyone else’s point of view but their own.
