Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics, Volume 1 (1913-1927) is a dynamite collection of Polly and Her Pals by Cliff Sterrett. The cover says 1913-1927 but 1913 through halfway of 1925 is just a sampling, including some ghost writers and artists during a six month sabbatical Sterrett took. It's not until he returns in 1925 that all Sunday strips are included.

The intro says Sterrett's style doesn't go into high gear until he gets back from the hiatus but it was clearly heading in that direction before the hiatus. Once he comes back, though, things skew decidedly weirder. It goes into a more modern art, cubist, surreal direction.

I haven't said it yet but this is the real shit. Short of Calvin and Hobbes, I can't think of a newspaper strip that has ever grabbed me this hard. It's a combination of Sterrett's art and sense of humor, I'd say. The characters aren't really anything special, although Paw Perkins is easily my favorite.

Five stars. If you live humorous newspaper strips. go grab this.
