This is definitely 1 of the better Kerouac novels, especially if you like standard process. The stories are fun, and feel like fresh recollections. The idea is that Jack is telling these stories to his wife. This add a reminiscence to them that is lacking in other books about his youth.

I would argue it's better to read the whole of the Town & the City, but if you're not up it this is a worthwhile shorter version.

I have learned way more about football than I ever needed to know, but the book becomes a finale of sorts to Kerouacs work, where he goes over various events from his life, and thus his other novels.

It does come to a somewhat nihilistic and depressing end, as you could tell how unhappy he was at the end of his life.

This book picks up significantly after getting through the play-by-play football game breakdowns. Kerouac's time on different navy ships during WWII is very interesting, and of course the introduction of the other Beats into his world. Quite a charming book.
