It's so jarring to see yourself in the pages of a book. It's so jarring and uncomfortable and comforting? maybe? to have something hit so close to home. This was the first (non-academic) book I read in months, and it welcomed me back into reading the same way some hugs remind you that you're not really alone. The writer is so caring and patient in the way she intertwines her patients with her own life with the theory behind therapeutic practices, and it never once felt like I was being lectured by a generic "self-help" book. I was left with many, many highlighted quotes and lingering thoughts about my life, and I'm thankful that I read it in the first place - I'm sure its impact on me will change as I revisit it over the years. Finishing reading this book was a bit of a painful goodbye, but, in retrospect, it's probably more of a contented pause between now and when I pick it up again in the future.
Looking forward to when therapy is not so taboo, and people realize that maybe, just maybe, they should talk to someone.

Really enjoyed reading this, it was interesting to read about therapy sessions from the therapist's point of view. I wasn't sure what to expect because a few years ago I read an earlier book by this author and didn't like it that much. This one was much better, almost like it was written by a completely different person.

Oof. This book. I did not expect to get as emotional as I did listening to this. Where do I even start?

I’m buying this book in print version so I can go through & annotate it. It’s. That. Good.

So many insights & aha moments for me. This was written as her story, but with her patients’ individual journeys as well & how they were interconnected. Gottlieb is a captivating writer and brutally honest when needed. I enjoyed the informative snippets about the science & psychology behind therapy techniques.

Another phenomenal story about the human condition and how to find the humanity in others. Absolutely loved it.
