This was such a slow start that I had to ask a friend if it was worth sticking it out and finishing it.

I’m glad I did. It was well worth the read!

Beautifully written and historically accurate. Chilling and hopeful, even in the face of hopelessness.

Alex and Charlie have been penpals for years. Alex was upset at first that Charlie was a girl, but he soon became dependent on her and her letters. As WWII broke out, neither are safe. Charlie is a Jewish girl in Paris. Alex is a Japanese-American who is sent with his family to Manzanar after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The book gets continually hard to read with part 4 being particularly tough as Alex went to fight in Italy and France. He not only wanted to help his father get released from prison, but he wanted to find Charlie. This book may be doubly tough since it deals with both the Jewish death camps and the Japanese internment camps.

This was the last Missouri Gateway Nominee I needed to read in order to read all 15. The writing was good overall, but the story was similar to others I've read before so I don't feel the need to read it. Honestly, this is a time thing. I need to read it in the next 2 days but I have other responsibilities and other books I'd like to read instead.

I didn’t love all of the language in it. It mentions “sexual conquests” and sleeping with girls too so I’d categorize it as YA rather than middle grade. It was okay but I didn’t love it.
