Byzantine plotting, great characters, evil minds, apocalyptic tension. Fantastic.

As is common for the second in a trilogy, much of this book involved setting up for the final showdown. There was a lack of cohesiveness in this novel as compared with the first - a little wishy washy, a bit directionless. I still enjoyed it now that I’m used to the author’s style - I’ve found his unusual sentence structure has become easier to understand.

The plot was less solid than that in the first. Much of the drama could’ve been resolved by the characters just not being shit at communication and not trusting random strangers just because they have a pretty face 🙄 If they’d just held a big meeting as in the first book, and not let anyone leave until they’d figured out who Bole was, the book would’ve been substantially shorter and with fewer deaths. Also, WTF Valourhand 🙄🙄🙄

I’m hoping the final book redeems this somewhat unsatisfying one.

P.S. just want to mention the things I love about this book…
  • The cover is gorgeous
  • The character list
  • The chapters are named!
  • Short chapters
  • I loved how all three books are structured (just started the third one). I like how the sections are structured in a similar but distinct manner.

Lots of to-ing and fro-ing and scene setting in this book, which got a bit complicated, and a little boring. Sometimes I was not sure who was doing what or why.

I expect all will be revealed in the final part of the trilogy. It had better be!

Meh. This wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. This is the rare occasion that the first book was better than the second. I will however read the final instalment in this trilogy to see if it gets better or if it gets worse. I am hoping it'll get better because I really enjoyed the first book.

This book, like the first, is very surreal. Normally that's not a bad thing. But its surreal quality comes in large part from the fact that it's extremely hard to follow. I'm done with this series.

Another enjoyable read. I found it easier to get "into" the wordiness of this book, I think she to starting it immediately after Rotherweird, so that helped me get into the story a bit faster.
Still no map unfortunately, but luckily not so many memos and notes in microscopic font to deal with this time.

I really liked the 1st book, but this one felt like a lot of nothing happening and an obvious reveal at the end. There was enough good to keep me reading (though I kept dropping off in the middle of some of the more laborious descriptions) and I still very much need to read Lost Acre.
The end may have been exactly what I thought, but it's still a cliffhanger and I still care about Jonah Oblong.
