I like this series. Each time Doc Ford goes out, something untoward happens. This time Doc goes with a small group to see about a possible sighting of airplane wreckage and its cargo. Gold....
It seems like a normal dive until catastrophe in the form of two escaped prisoners and a rock slide while in the lake. And there is also the possibility of large man-eating critters in the area.
Very suspenseful and it all happens in the course of a few days. Very well told so the reader feels the claustrophobia of the aftermath of the rockslide and the casual evil of the escapees.
Definite recommend.

Read this in one sitting. Suspenseful, gripping, hard to put down--all those stereotypical adjectives--really do apply in this case.

This was an interesting set-up for a book. All of the action takes place during an eight hour span of time. Before Castro came to power in Cuba, Batista emptied the treasury and flew the gold out of Cuba on four planes. Arlis Futch believes he has found one, crashed into a lake in central Florida. Doc Ford, Tomlinson and Will Joseph go with Arlis to dive the lake and find out what's down there. At the same time, two men are on the run from police. A collision course has been set. While the three are down in the lake, a limestone rim collapses and cuts off Tomlinson and Will Joseph. When Doc surfaces, he finds Arlis has been taken hostage by the two criminals. Now he has a dilemma, he has to save both Arlis as well as Tomlinson and Will Joseph. The action rachets up another notch when Doc discovers the lake is the home to a gigantic Komodo lizard that has probably been living there since the plane crashed, forty years. It is a breath-taking thrill ride.

Good! Much better than I was expecting from a random book off the library shelf.
I had no idea it was part of a series, though I could have guessed, given Will's past and references to the kind of man that Ford was, without any direct mention.
I have a hard time imagining all the adventures that a marine biologist could get into, but if the rest of the series is as enjoyable and tense as this one, I'm sure I would enjoy them as well.
I listened to this one as an audiobook and George Guidall continues to be an excellent narrator.
