Brightly Coloured Horses is an apt title for this beautiful collection of vibrant and multi-hued flash fiction stories. The reader is transported to many different countries to experience a variety of relationships and emotions at the peak of a single moment in the characters’ lives.
While each piece is distinctive and haunting in its own right, threads of love and loss, of betrayal and disappointment, of compassion and misunderstanding, bind these high quality stories together. From the first to the last, the reader rejoices and grieves, empathises and identifies with a range of human emotions depicted with great skill and flair.
The writing is flawless and carefully shaded, the layers of meaning unfolding discreetly from the narrative. The author effortlessly evokes the settings and surroundings of each story as if painting pictures of India, Catalonia or Japan, the sea, an olive grove or cherry blossom, with a few refined brush-strokes.
Among all these skilfully written stories, a few of my favourites are Warning Flag, The Turquoise Silk, and the title story itself. But it is possible to choose any one and be swept straight into a compelling and memorable world you have never visited before and will always remember.
