This book taught me about a part of the world I know little about. It, also, gave me a history lesson from an insider’s point-of-view. The animation gave some relief to the heavy topics. This was my first time reading an adult graphic novel. This art form brings lightheartedness to the reader.

Persepolis really is a magnificent journey. I read this during my breaks at work and it was the first time in a while I was counting down the hours during my shift that I could get back to a book. This story touches on so much, growing up in tumultuous times, witnessing death and destruction as part of your childhood, seeing family members disappear, struggling to breathe as a girl in a deeply misogynistic society. Then Europe comes and the old challenges fade away, only to be replaced with new, more philosophical ones - trying to find your place in life, never feeling settled, and trying to adjust amidst a severe culture shock. It's an astoundingly funny and tragic work and easily one of the most fantastic autobiographies I've ever read. As a last note, the art work is great and easy to follow.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel, despite knowing very little about Iranian history. It took me out of the story a little bit at first, but the narrator revealed enough information throughout the novel, without it being a forced exposition, that I found myself more immersed in the story and knowledgable about the topic. The story itself is heartbreaking, and the author portrays the heavy emotions masterfully. I am sad to see the end of her childhood end on such a sad note, and I am even more saddened by the fact a lot of people have lived through what Satrapi has lived through, and still do to this day.
