This book taught me about a part of the world I know little about. It, also, gave me a history lesson from an insider’s point-of-view. The animation gave some relief to the heavy topics. This was my first time reading an adult graphic novel. This art form brings lightheartedness to the reader.

this is the memoir of a woman who grew up in Iran during the Islamic revolution, and as such it does have a lot of dark subject matter. Still, it has moments of hope, beauty, and even humor in a bleak situation, such as her relationship with her grandmother and some of her friends. The illustrations are effective at conveying the peoples emotions and enhance the story. This book should be read to better understand the background of many Iranian people and their struggles.

I finally got around to reading this and I am so angry it took me so long. This was such an informative and emotional read. 

The author also has such an eye for pacing and much needed levity when things got dark in the narrative. To be so honest about your mistakes and growth is really admirable.  

Eventually I should watch the movie…
