Wooden boat building is an extremely specialized skill. This picture-book shaped graphic novel is based on the real boat-building experiences of the author during the 20th century. The boat takes many months to build. We see every step, from selecting the design, to framing the hull, to installing the engine and placing a silver dollar under the mast. Using a minimal color palette, we watch Gubby (a returning character from the creators’ previous collaboration, Fishing with Gubby) determine his need for a new boat and work with his friend, Minoru, to build it. Along with Minoru, Gubby has the help of many other community members. The illustrations depict the river culture of British Columbia. Clearly an effort to preserve this culture, the story is told engagingly and the illustrations bring to mind the work of Hergé. A fine addition for libraries seeking Pacific Northwest heritage themed titles and historical graphic novels for kids. //pro review

Got this as part of a reviewing gig I was doing for a few years. It's memorable enough, but I'm a bit of a PacNW nerd, so that might just be me. :)
