Whew, this was difficult to get through, but I toughed it out and I'm glad I did in light of the Dobbs decision in 2022, which is why I picked it up in the first place.

Just an FYI, this book pre-dates the Dobbs decision by at least a decade, so the parts about abortion should be read with that in mind.

So many gut punches, especially when you consider that things have gotten so much worse for reproductive justice since this book first came out.

There was so much in this book I'd never thought about, which shows my privilege like neon. Infuriating and unsurprising, the way this country has treated the reproductive rights of Black people is disgusting and heartbreaking. This was written in 1997, but not much has changed since! The system is designed to punish Black people for having children. Full stop. Really damning and subversive book, even for 2023. Recommended.
