Anna Louise Strong gives as usual an in person look at the issues of her day from a place often speculated about by other journalists indirectly rather than directly. The book takes into account a historical account of Stalin, it analyses his merits and his deficiencies, it is one of the few works which, when analysing Stalin, does not rely on simplification, but, instead, relies on evidence and a thorough analysis. Anna Louise Strongs writing therefore gives little excuses for anyone, but reports in her own terms, what she saw living and working in the USSR, what she studied and what she got from conversations with the Soviet people.
I would definitely recommend this book.

great book written with so much heart. must read if you need honest and soulful insight into this soviet time period without anti communist mythos from person who actually lived here.
