It’s Jane Austen, but a gothic novel. Catherine’s naivety was refreshing, but I liked her growth into a reasoning adult. Great novel by my favorite author!

One of my favorites of Jane Austen's works. Its faults are forgiven for the suitability to the point that it makes, that its heroine is unlike those typical heroines that would be exciting to read about. Perhaps if the ending's pacing didn't remind me so much of Mansfield Park's, and it involved perhaps some more confrontation with Isabella--but it is good either way, bolstered by its humor and good natured narration.

Good characters and a somewhat engaging story. Seems very apparent this isn't a 100% Jane Austen novel but it was enjoyable ... just not the expected Austen standard.
As stated the story was engaging but slow. I didn't care for the narrator addressing the reader directly. It really pulled me out of the story and setting. The story also went gothic a couple of times which seemed out of place.
The characters were well written and their personalities were revealed through their own words and actions which I think Jane Austen does extremely well.
The biggest disappointment for me was the ending which seemed very anticlimactic and thrown together. Instead of continuing the story to the end you just got a summary of what happened.
