A boy and his grandfather, recently emigrated from Mexico, are looking for a day's work. They get hired for a landscaping job because the boy tells the boss that his grandfather has experience. Since he doesn't know English, the grandfather isn't aware of the lie. They do the job and work hard at it. Unfortunately, they didn't understand the directions, so the boss is very upset with the outcome. The core values of honesty and a strong work ethic come through without being preachy. This is good for personal narrative, units about rights and responsibilities, and it makes a good mentor text for theme.

This is a good one for kids who want to read about non-Anglo cultures. It also provides a nice lesson about social equality.

Another good story to use in teaching the importance of honesty.

The situation, language, and images brought me back to San Diego, and prompted me to revisit the topic of illegal immigration and to discuss it with my son. Bunting portrays a completely realistic day for an immigrant who is most likely illegal, but maybe not. He's definitely paid under the table, hangs out waiting to be picked up, so most likely he IS. He's certainly exploited like an illegal immigrant. However, the message of the story is that honesty and integrity are more important than a day's pay; the abuelo actually says that one should never LIE to get work. But.... ?

Bunting is so good at bringing real-life, diverse issues into your home. I enjoyed the conversation about character and politics with my 10-year-old most of all.

A little dated with the gardening aspects but still relevant from the migrant worker front.
