This was such an excellent conclusion to the series, and I'm very glad to have read it.

Things I loved:
  • CYRIL AND ARISTIDE! Aristide made me cry twice while reading this book, and the trajectory these characters' relationship takes in this book is sensitive and beautiful and complicated and a little fucked up (as is to be expected from them).
  • Lillian! I didn't care about her very much in book two, but her relationship with Cyril and her complicated psyche and family life and the way she navigates all of that was very compelling.
  • The political backdrop was interesting and complicated and just what I wanted from the conclusion to this series.
  • Lara Elena Donnelly writes fantasy the way most people write historical fiction (focusing more on the people in a specific context than on the Big Historical Events) and it's so different and interesting and good.
  • Lots of scheming and drinking and moral ambiguity.
  • THE LAST TWO LINES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things to note so that you go into this book properly prepared:
  • No Cordelia in this one.
  • We've skipped the revolution and we're in the aftermath now.
  • A lot of this book focuses on a troubled teen.
  • Cyril may be our favorite fucked up man but he's also a fantasy Nazi collaborator and don't forget it.

What didn't work for me as much:
  • I wish the political plotline had reached more of a conclusion

Amnesty wasn't as absolutely incredible as Amberlough was, but it was a great book and a wonderful conclusion to a unique and wild series that captured my heart, and the plot and characters worked much better for me in this one than in book two (which I did also thoroughly enjoy, to be clear).
