Started for book club but didn’t have time to finish. May return to it another time.

A magical, emotional journey, populated with excellent characters. This book was such a treat, a philosophically profound and immersive high fantasy adventure that left me eager for the sequels!

Good fun. It's been so long since I cut loose with fantasy like this and I enjoyed the ride. Parts of it played out like levels in a video game or a D&D scenario but truthfully those aspects of it were part of the appeal.
There were a few moments of dialogue or happenstance that felt contrived and clunky, a few bad turns of phrase and the odd eye-rolling characterization of women. Nothing that made me think the author had never met a human woman but that did warrant a 'duuuuude.....' all the same.

In the end it was just fun and charming. I'll be reading the rest for sure.
