A queer book with a happy ending written in 1913? Modern books take note. I love EM forester’s writing, storytelling and characters and this was no different.

maurice has so much of what i like least about forster: his unrelenting naive liberalism, his exaggerated sentimentality that can tilt into bathos, his tendency for a sudden, barely rational turn in a characterЃEЂЃEs personality and arc, and his style of telling, rather than showing, vital chunks of plot. i shouldnЃEЂЃEt like this - and yet there is so clearly a raw nerve of emotional truth (and how could there not be?) underneath it all that elevates certain passages above the whole.
