Death is always portrayed the same old way. Neil Gaiman's Death is something else entirely: a perky girl who really seems the most upbeat of all the Endless. She lives one day a century as a moral to understand what life is really about and she really is an awesome girl who I would be totally okay with meeting at the end of my life. This volume collects Death's appearance in Sandman as well as "The High Cost of Living" and "Time of Your Life" and maybe my favourite side project ever: a six page comic in which Death teaches you how to put a condom on a banana with the help of John Constantine. Sex Ed and AIDS info from Death. Awesome.

If you liked Season of Mists, but thought both the writing and artwork were done too well, then this is the perfect book for you. Retread of the original story, with some bolted on tedious new material, all done in a generic manga style. Death deserves better.

What has made Gaiman's "Sandman" one of my all-time favourite comic book series is that it uses the supernatural and fantastical as a backdrop for the real human stories that go on within the pages. Dream is the lead character, that is to be sure, but each arch has a set of excellent characters living in the real world, getting messed up by whatever unbelievable dream creature (usually a metaphor for some part of the human experience). With "Death," Gaiman takes Dream's sister, a level-headed foil to Morpheus' gloomy attitude, and follows her as she visits many characters who have appeared in the main "Sandman" series. What follows is a collection of short-stories that, for the most part, captures what is so enjoyable about the original series. Most of the stories are featured in "Sandman" collections I had already read, but the main two graphic novels were new to me. The art, from a variety of artists, is excellent and should come as no surprise to "Sandman" aficionados; Gaiman has a real eye for artistic talent. This collection is in no way necessary reading for fans of "Sandman," but it was highly entertaining and recommended if you are looking to know a bit more about Dream's older sister.

like for many other readers, Death is one of my favorite characters ever, so of course i have to read this story. but, wow, what a let-down. it could have been a great story, but all this rewriting of Season of Mists from another point of view? no, thank you. all the characters looked really cute tho.

Cute, very cute - which still seems to suit Death.
