Oh my god. I literally loved every second of it and I was so sad to finish it. I really enjoyed the Afrikaans mixed in with the English and having so much of South African culture embedded into this book. You don't see many books set in South Africa, but this was outstanding and I will definitely read it again when I get the chance.

Unread shelf project 2022: book 52.

The premise? 5 stars. Very creative, I love the different culture aspects and the type of magic.

The actual story? 2 stars. I got more lost in this story than I want to admit. I definitely didn’t know what was going on with the Jackal all the time.

This book has everything a YA reader is after; A wonderful magic system, a hidden world, good and evil, a love interest, family and no end of twists and turns to keep you constantly hooked on every page.

The anger that Savannah feels is so raw and for many, so relatable. As you read you feel like you are there, raging alongside her, wanting her tormentors to get what they deserve.

I loved the magic system and the world that was created by the author and if i had one critique it would be that I wanted to know more. If this book was a series i would happily pick up the next book and get reading.

This is a YA fantasy romance and I appreciate the romance taking a backseat to the story. I'm really glad I read this but I don't think it will stay with me forever. I loved reading this story set in South Africa about a coloured (preferred term in SA and noted at the start of the book) young woman who holds so much anger. The first opening scenes where a guy shouts at her from his car and she grabs a bat and smashes in the hood makes the whole book worth a read. I love the embrace of anger and the illustrated necessity of having that anger as a weapon, especially as a woman.

I thought the dream sequences were really well done and solidly interwoven into the plot.

I do feel like there were too many moving parts at times and the focus wasn't enough on the main thrust of the story. A lot of things happened and some of them I was kind of drifting as to why I was there. There were some bad decisions made by the characters given the stakes and some moments that I didn't quite understand their reasoning when more sensible decisions were definitely available.

Overall I enjoyed this and would reccomend.
