Such a wonderful book but the ending was so abrupt! I wanted more of the story! There definitely could have (and should have, IMO) been a book between this one and the next one in the series.

To fourteen year old Georgi, the idea of war with Germany seems exciting. Though too young to join the army and unable to find a way to sneak in anyway, Georgi throws himself into volunteer work, determined to help protect his country. It isn’t until the Germans begin surrounding Leningrad that reality sinks in. Now Georgi concerns himself with protecting his shrinking circle of family and friends. Can Georgi succeed in bringing himself and those he cares about through a brutal winter as he grows into manhood?

Very well done! This book offers a look at WW II from a teenage boy living in Leningrad. It’s a perspective I had never considered before.

Pre-read this as as it’s an independent reader in my daughter’s curriculum. Details Russia’s involvement in Word War II and the struggles in Leningrad/St Petersburg as the Germans approached. Reading level is not too difficult, but subject matter is heavy, with lots of death and suffering. The story also ends quite abruptly. A good story though for middle-grade readers for a setting not often appearing in children’s literature.

More believable storyline than the previous one, a good exploration of, and explanation of, the Siege of Leningrad.
