This was a lot darker than The Marrow Thieves. The time spent in one of the "schools" and with the vigilantes was unsettling. Despite the darkness, Dimaline managed to leave me feeling hopeful at the end. I love this found family.

Dimaline says herself that she intended for The Marrow Thieves to be a standalone book, and it was definitely clear in how it was written. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, since sometimes unplanned sequels feel forced, but this one didn't. Maybe it helped that Dimaline picked up right where the first book left off, which worked in that it meant there was still action happening, but didn't work in that it meant that Frenchie and the family were still having challenges thrown at them left and right. The plot was interesting and I really liked how everything came together. It started off a bit slow but then it really picked up. I love Dimaline's work, and while I prefer her work for adults, this was still a solid and really enjoyable read.

A heart-wrenching sequel to The Marrow Thieves, Cherie Dimaline has a brilliance with writing gripping books with large casts of characters. I kept flipping through chapters, anticipating what would happen next, hoping desperately for a good outcome at the end. I won't spoil anything, but Dimaline has way of letting each character's strength shine.
