This was a surprise. I wasn't expecting much from this book and only picked it because it fit the challenge I'm working on (it's set in El Salvador for my Around the World 80 Books Challenge). But this turned to be a lovely, although sad, story about Nicholas as he searches for his mother, lost to him at a funeral mass in the city. Through the whole book, Nicholas struggles against one terrible obstacle after another in civil war torn El Salvador. A lucky boy though he doesn't have to do this completely alone and takes comfort from his guardian angel La Virgen.

Mostly this book just made me feel lucky I grew up in a country where I've never had to deal with any of these problems.
