I went into this knowing the end and yet, I still cried. I could have finished this in two days, but I didn't want to reach the end. The story of Ryan White is tragic, but it is a story people should know.

I bought this book from the Indianapolis Childrens Museum after seeing their exhibit on Ryan White's life. It was a great exhibit and this is a great book. It's written in YA style, so it's a quick read but very captivating.

This story blows my mind! It’s appalling and heartbreaking. But part of me thinks it’s really cool how he got so close with Elton John and Michael Jackson.

“I figured out a couple of other things in the hospital too. One was how to handle pain. There’s nothing great about having to stay in the hospital, but the worst part is how boring it is. If anything hurts, it’s real easy to let the pain take over, because there’s not much else to think about. You need as much distraction as possible. Once I started practicing not thinking about pain, I got to be fairly good af picking up a magazine until that didn’t work anymore, then trying TV, and after that setting up my G.I. Joes.” RW

“Most of the time I can’t be bothered thinking about the past. I figure, if things have been bad, that means you have something to look forward to, right?” RW

“I couldn’t relax, but I had to, because I was still on the ventilator. You can’t fight the machine; you have to lay back and let it do it’s work.” RW
—as a vent patient this spoke so much truth!—

“I don’t care who you are or how bad off you are, there is always somebody out there who’s in worse shape than you are.” RW

“In Kokomo, fear had gotten the better of everybody. I understood that. No one was really against me; they were against my disease.” RW

“The point is, you’ve got to try and change people anyway. Lots of times I get the same questions over and over. So I work hard to be patient, I really do.” RW

“Now I challenge all of us to accept his faith. For you see, Ryan was successful too, in getting all of us involved. He helped us to care and to believe that with God’s help, nothing is impossible—even for a kid” -Rev Probasco

I’m so glad I read this.

Ryan White was a force. He had such a positive attitude and definitely helped change the stigma of AIDS.
