I read the first book in this series, Archangel, about ten years ago. The two main characters were strong and not particularly likeable, but it was the world Shinn created and the music she described that hooked me entirely. I was enchanted with Samaria and the larger cast of characters. I ran right out to the bookstore (because this was back in the days when you had to do that if you wanted to read something that your library didn't have) to get the next in the series. I was so disappointed when I found out that it wasn't about the same group of people that I did little more than skim through.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. For some reason over the Christmas holidays I decided to re-visit this one without having read Archangel immediately before it, and discovered that this is really a terrific book. It is as much about faith, doubt, and skepticism as it is about angels and music. What do you do when you find out that the religion you have followed faithfully all your life is based on a lie? Can anything be salvaged from the wreckage? Plenty of reviewers have described Samaria and the characters, I will just add that this is now my favorite of the series. I'm giving it four stars rather than five because it seemed more clumsily written--I wondered if she wrote this one first, even though it was published second. Her style seemed more fluid and assured in Archangel and the subsequent books.

Definitely did not enjoy it as much as the first book. However, I think that might be my own fault. Went in expecting fantasy, got sci fi instead. I love both but I just wasn't ready for the leap. Didn't find the characters or the love stories as compelling either.

This book heavily surpasses the previous entry. The characters are more interesting. Archangel set up this fascinating world while Jovah’s Angel really digs into it and gives you a tale you did not know you wanted from this setting. I think it really sets the series up tremendously, and I am excited to get my hands on the next entry!

I find the characters in this series really likeable and endearing - man did the end throw me though. A fun, comforting read.

The romance wasn't as DRAMATIC and ANGTSY as the first one, which is actually a negative because I like when two headstrong equals yell at each other then kiss even though the two main characters of this book are very likeable and the romance is charming. I felt like all the secret plot twists were too obvious to guess from the beginning which made it drag on for me. The bait-and-switch of fantasy to sci-fi was also mildly hilarious at times:

Loved this. Especially loved the rich religion vs science debate. Really liked Caleb, Alleya and Delilah's stories.

WTF this was supposed to be a fantasy series, Merde, the cover should have clued me in!! Dancing burritos! She goes fantasy half a book then pulls the SF GOD-IS-A-SPACESHIP cliche. Pete's sake, no more crap from this author.

Read this back in March. I really enjoyed it better than the first one in the series. Not sure if I will continue or not.
