Such an emotional story!!! In this book Matt Coyne breaks your heart with Frank and Red's separate situations and then puts it back together again. A lot of these themes were so important to be discussed and resonated so much, especially with Red and how much children, however young, notice things happening in their lives. I did think the story of the last 50ish pages were a bit much, because it portrayed Red as overly headstrong for a 6 year old and although we can dream of improving things for people, things like this its never super sensible to mess with. Definitely not what I expected but overall a good read.

I have seen so may of my book friends raving about this book so had to read it for myself and I am so glad I did.

Frank is in his sixties and has lived on his own the last couple of years after losing his wife Marcie. Since his loss, he has pushed everyone away and doesn’t leave his house. He just wants to be left on his own so he can wallow in his self pity. That changes though when Sarah and her six year old son Red move into the terraced house next door.

Whilst Frank may be a grumpy old man, you can’t help but be fond of him. Who knows how the loss of a loved one would change any of us but little Red is determined to make friends with his new neighbour which makes for some hilarious and heartwarming moments. The unlikely pair strike up a friendship of sorts and I just couldn’t get enough of their story.

Frank & Red was just a glorious. It tackles lots of topics such as grief, bullying and dealing with big changes in your life. Red’s innocence was just adorable and his straight forward talking had me in stitches with laughter. There are so many endearing moments and it left me feeling so uplifted by the end. I would love to see this turned into a film as there is just a magical quality about it that leaves you feeling like you are floating in air with the happiness it gives you. An absolute joy to read!

"'The man next door...he's not Miles.'
'Eh? Well, that's a crazy thing to say. Of course he' s not Miles, Miles as a pigeon.'
Miles was indeed a pigeon. A pigeon who had splatted into their patio doors when read was four years old, and knocked itself unconscious...Over the next few days, Red has nursed Mike's back to health in a cardboard box...
'No...What I mean is, I recognise that look on your face. What I mean is, you see something that's injured, and you want to fix it. But sometimes you can't. Fix things, I mean.'"

Grieving, agoraphobic widower, Frank and sparky, new young neighbour, Red collide in this tale of friendship and taking risks. Curmudgeon Frank finds himself looking after six year old Red when he is suspended for school for a week after trouble with a bully. As they bond over jigsaws and Pokemon, Red realises Frank is lonely and sets out on a mission to reunite him with his estranged son, Mikey.

Witty and affectionate filled with well-observed insights into the minds of an elderly widower and a six year old whose life has been upended following a house move and a new school. Red's Mum Sarah is lovely, struggling after her husband leaves her, but determinedly focused on what's best for Red. The inclusion of Marcie, Frank's late wife, as an 'imaginary friend' guiding him towards Red and Mikey was a lovely touch. A heartwarming debut novel I throughly enjoyed. I bought my copy at #TastingNotesLive earlier this month where I was lucky enough to listen to and meet the author, who described being influenced by his father and his son and who kindly signed my copy of his book.
