This one was much better than the first one (the delta anomaly) and almost seemed as if it should go first since it covers the first couple months of their Starfleet training. The mystery was interesting and I enjoyed reading about the relationships between the characters prior to them joining the Enterprise crew I wished it would've focused more on that than introducing new characters that were almost irritating at times.
It was enjoyable overall and I recommend it as a quick one-day read to any one who was a fan of the 2009 movie.

Hmmmm.

I went into this book with low expectations, and I was rewarded for it. Although the writing is mediocre and the plot is relatively unremarkable, banter is what keeps this book going, along with moral quandaries that can only be described as quintessentially Star Trek. Uhura and Spock were cute together, and Kirk was an overconfident flirt as always. My only legitimate complaint would be that Bones felt a bit flat here.

It was enjoying this but the lack of imagination by the author when it came to solving the main mystery was so shocking I can’t overlook it.
The author uses technology from our time, specifically a laptop, in Star Trek to solve the issue.
Tell me you can’t think outside the box without telling me you can’t think outside the box.

Loved the commentary on the toxic environment that Starfleet can be. Glad I reread this!

This book really surprised me. I gave up reading Star Trek series fiction when I was in high school after I realized that one book was just like the next. I was really hesitant when I picked this up thinking that this book would be one more of the same type of series. While it does have the feel of series fiction, the characters and the story were original and fun. Basically, this one is a fun read for the Trekkies out there looking for something new.

On a side note, this particular series is being marketed to teens. It is definitely suitable for teens, but I think that marketing may limit its interest because I really feel that adults will enjoy reuniting with these favorite characters too.

Overall a fun book.

Cautions for sensitive readers: The books is about performance enhancing medicine and there are a couple of deaths, but nothing graphic. A pretty clean read.
