Rigid gender roles for magic are established in this world where wizards are supposed to be men and witches are supposed to be women. So the main character, a girl destined to be a wizard at birth, has experiences of doubt and humility in trying to prove herself to both a witch and wizards as someone deserving to learn how to be a proper wizard. But these sexist veiled comments are humorously presented where Pratchett does a good job of making it clear how absurd these perceptions are. These rigid gender roles are also challenged and in the process of changing by the end of the book because of events that happened with the main character's involvement.josiee's review against another edition

The writing is pure Pratchett, eloquent and witty. I really liked that about this book, but I also was not totally smitten with the story. It sets up a base for later Discworld novels, but doesn't stand alone very well.

It's a very nice story and I enjoyed all of the characters and also learning more about the Unseen University and witches, wizards and warlocks . I was a bit sad that DEATH (I'm really looking forward to Mort) only made one appearance and that we didn't learn more about the disk world itself.
I hope that Granny and Esk make a reappearance in the Disk world novels.
