A very cute and very unique “first day of school” picture book that I’m excited to put as a face-out at the end of summer!

I already spotted this book some months ago, but then I spotted it again in the Goodreads 2016 choice awards and decided to see if I could find it.
And I did! And this was definitely a fun, original, creative book. There are so many books about school, about first days, but how many of those are from the school's POV? I frankly can't think of one other than this one.
This school just got build, and he is going to experience what it is to be a school soon. He is worried about it and he asks his friend, the Janitor, what is going to happen. The Janitor explains, and then the first day happens. A lot of things happen during the first day. Kids who don't like school (which made the school sad), jokes (which the school did like), paintings, and also embarrassment when his fire alarm goes off (I loved how he said sorry to everyone for it when it happened). Plus, just like the kids, he learns something!
The school is a great character, but I also liked the little girl and her first day. How she, just like the School had a few moments that weren't fun, but then it turned out to be an OK and fun day after all.
I loved the art style of the illustrations, it fitted perfectly with the feel of the book.
The ending was adorable, and I laughed. Yay, yay for the School! I hope he can have many more days like this, happy days, fun days.

This (wonderfully illustrated by Christian Robinson) picture book fully developed the characters of a school building and at least three people in its brief pages. It also made me laugh out loud.

i don't think the kids nor I really enjoyed this one - despite it being on many "kids books to read" lists this year.

An adorable spin on the first day of school. Loved the quirkiness of how a young school could react to it's first day of students. A sweet ending and a good addition for my kindergarten read aloud a in the fall.

Nervous about the first day of school? Imagine how the school must feel. Told from the perspective of the school itself, this tale covers the anticipation of the first day to all of the day's activities to the school's reflections at the end of the first day. As usual, Christian Robinson's illustrations add to the appeal of this funny tale of starting school.

This was........so cute. Our professor read this to us on the first day of class (it's a children's literature collections class) and it was just every bit perfect, from Rex's writing and personification to Robinson's illustrations and color use. It's every bit engaging and delightful, especially with the relationship the school has with the janitor as well as the relationships that grow between the school and the children as nerves, excitement, and bundles of emotion spring forth.
This is just wonderful for anybody's first day of school, and especially for children who might be a little worried or hesitant.
