A quick read, good for on-the-go, fairly interesting premise (even if does suffer from orientalist mysticism), unfortunately suffers from being extra weird towards its female characters and an obsession with sexual assault(?) towards them, with the titular djinn being sexual and sadistic but only toward women. Has a weird ugly sister/pretty sister fable element with the beauty corresponding to morals. It’s unfortunate because the story easily works without those elements or snippets for shock value but alas

This book is fun but quite dated. Brash cocky male characters, sexy, deceitful female characters. Its a short book with a decent idea, get past the corny writing and it can be an enjoyable read.

Just ok could have been better, but the time it was written, it is like the others of that era

Personally, I wouldn't recommend due to sexual violence- see content warnings. Star rating based on plot and writing quality, rather than other content.

Mastert on rarely disappoints, especially when ancient otherworldly and culturally unfamiliar forces are at work.

Featuring Harry Erskine, the likeable protagonist from THE MANITOU (the events of which, oddly, aren’t mentioned), this one starts well but in the second half the style of writing deteriorates quite considerably. There’s a lot of graphic adult content but at its core the plot is juvenile and very silly, with the characters either not doing what they should (run!) or suddenly making the right move unprompted by any new information or circumstance. It’s fun and fast-paced—and there’s one very memorable and horrific scene—but ultimately doesn’t amount to much. Not Masterton at his best.

I've read both this German version and the original version, from the German translation there's a page missing, probably because it was deemed to gory at the time.
