I found this by chance while looking through the S picture books at the library for another Australian author. Its surreal-whimsical cover and concept reminded me of Shaun Tan and so of course I had to borrow it! A girl who lives in a desert caravan park longs to have a 'freedom machine' of her own to take her on fantastical adventures. And the wonderful thing for bibliophiles is that the freedom machine is not what you'd expect! At times I felt the language was superfluous to the pictures, but there were also beautiful lines of unexpected poetry, like 'As she grew in a world sewn together by boundaries' and 'In her unfurling world, it was all she would ever need'. The author is a poet, no wonder, but also an Aboriginal woman, which I was thrilled to discover, as my current Aussie reading kick is being greatly enriched by indigenous voices. I've added her poetry collection Kindred to my to-read list.
