Second read: Treasure Island is just as fantastic a read the second time around. Great fun. I didn't even bother with The Ebb-Tide.
First read: I picked up Treasure Island randomly, or maybe because Neil Gaiman mentioned it in his collection of nonfiction, I can't really remember. Nothing targeted in my selection of the book, is the point, and I had only the vaguest idea of its contents. So I was surprised and delighted by the vivid images that Treasure Island conjured up in the first few paragraphs. I could really see Billy Bones and feel the salty breeze, and it was irritating to have to surface from this adventure long enough to pay for the book. It feels like ages since I've been so thoroughly swept away into a book. Fantastic read.
The Ebb-Tide is preachy and forgettable.

I enjoyed Treasure Island, but my surprising favourite is undoubtably The Ebb-Tide. Incredible character building, just wow. One of my favourites of all time.

3 stars for treasure island
1.5 stars for ebb tide
- I think I would have enjoyed treasure island more if I hadn’t had to have speed read it for my degree, but I don’t think I would have enjoyed the ebb tide no matter what time I read it 😂

Treasure Island: 3/5 stars
It was going to be 2 stars, the writing was tedious and slow and I couldn't get myself interested in the plot. However, switching to the audiobook made it a thoroughly more enjoyable experience, and the book gets some extra points for inspiring the gem that is Black Sails
The Ebb-tide: 3.5/5 stars
After the chore that was Treasure Island I was apprehensive of this book, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
The three main characters, brought together by their shared misery and failures in life, are all interesting and well-developed characters. Their relationships, the quite unpredictable plot and the abrupt, but gripping ending all made this a pleasant read.
