**Trigger Warning: contains a rape scene

I adore Denise Grover Swank. I've read over 30 of her books but this one was a fail for me. I like a bit of fantasy but I had to suspend too much of reality for this one. I just never got into the story either and when it came to the rape scene I had to stop. Please, if you have a rape scene include trigger warnings in the description. It will save people pain.

I’m really not into science fiction type books, but this series was a definite exception to my rule. This was a thrilling read that I couldn’t put down since I started reading it, can’t wait to see what else happens in the series! I highly recommend to people who like sci-fi, but also to those who don’t because Denis Grover Swank does a great job of making you think this could really be happening and we just don’t know it. This was the first book of the series and is recommended to be read first, but I’ve also read “Emergence” and I think it would be OK to read that one first.

It starts out with a mother, Emma, on the run with her son, Jake. These bad men that Jake can actually see coming are after them. Along with these “bad men” is another organization hunting Emma, and they sent Will. Will is a mercenary who is hired to bring Emma in alive. He’s unaware of these “bad men” who are trying to kill Emma and take Jake. He pairs with Emma along with Jake’s help to get Emma to these people that want her. But along the way, he undergoes a paranormal experience with Jake and he is marked as the chosen one and given a specific prophecy. Now he feels a strong and protective need to keep Emma safe from all of these people. Along their journey, Jake is taken by the “bad men”, and Emma learns she has supernatural powers as well. Will and Emma also get intimate, leading to her becoming pregnant with the next child, which seems to fit in with the prophecy that Will heard from Jake. As Will and Emma are escaping, Emma is shot and becomes in critical condition. Will is forced to hand her over to his people because they want her alive. He ends up being black mailed by a future presidential candidate and is forced to become part of his secret service while Emma stays and recuperates with the candidates son, Alex. As Will is leaving, he also learns he has supernatural powers and communicates with Emma in his head. Alex turns out to be the person that raped her, causing her to become pregnant with Jake. Will takes the candidate hostage to get Emma away. This book ends with Emma and Will on the run from 2 groups – one to help keep Emma alive until she has her second child – but now wants Will dead, and the other who wants Emma dead.

Ridiculously bad...I could feel my brain congealing as I read, and quit part way through chapter two.

This was an interesting beginning for a good versus evil series of books. The plot is interesting, but not new! The characters have extreme highs and lows which can be a bit too dramatic to my taste. They are well defined nonetheless. It will be interesting to find out where Denise Grover Swank will take us and where we will end up.

This had been on my to-read list for ages, and had I known how good it was I'd have read it sooner. I'll definitely be buying the remainder of the series as I cant wait to find out what happens to Emma, Will and Jake. It's the perfect mix of action, romance and the supernatural. I loved it how Emma and Will were flawed and had lots of history. I cant wait to find out more.

This book was okay. It seemed like the timeline was very rushed and that made it unbelievable (if prophecies and supernatural occurrences were real). But within less than a week the characters fell in love and she got pregnant? And then the very beginning; a mother is running away from bad men with her son and allows a complete stranger to come along for the ride? I don't think so. I think I'm going to read the rest of the series though just because.

Chosen isn't my typical go to genre for reading. That being said I love Denise Grover Swank and am willing to try anything she has written. This book didn't disappoint. When the story opens ee are pulled into Emma's world in the middle of an action scene. Emma is a fierce mother protecting her son. The story is fast paced and intriguing. I bought the second book within minutes of finishing Chosen and am off to find out what happens to Emma and Will right now!

Emma has spent the last five years on the run; running from a dangerous unknown entity who's bent on tracking her son. Jake seemed to have a preternatural ability to see the future, which is handy considering he only sees when the "bad men" are coming. On one close call, they run into a drifter who was willing to help them run away. Untrusting Emma knew in her guts that she shouldn't put their lives in the hands of a stranger. But when bullets started flying in their direction, she knew they no longer have a choice.

Will Davenport has his own agenda - to bring Emma Thompson, alive, to those who hired him. But he never counted on a five-year old boy who seemed much wiser than his age and who'd been in way too many chases to last him a lifetime. Things got even weirder when the boy started talking about a prophecy which includes him as The Chosen, his mother as the queen, and the two sons who would eventually decide the fate of the world. Talk about pressure. It's all good though, because it's not like Will has a choice or a say in the matter. All he knew was the indomitable urge to protect Emma regardless of what he'd face when he failed to bring her to the people who wanted her. What was once a means to a pay check turned into something more - an emotional connection with a "job" that he'd never once allow himself to feel in a long time.

My second DGS book turned out to be a pleasant and an odd experience. The non-stop chase left me breathless in such a way that action movies tend to make my heart race until the hero gets his revenge. Eighty percent of the novel alludes to a prophecy unfulfilled or half-way fulfilled, depending on how much you've paid attention to the story line. But the end result will leave you feeling like you just didn't have a full grasp of what you've read. This is pretty much how I've felt. That doesn't mean, however, that I wasted my time reading this book. On the contrary, I can't wait to read the next one. The ambiguous story arc will make you want to re-read it soon after you've reached the end of the line. Primarily for the need to sate the overwhelming urge to have a mild understanding of what it's about.

You can attempt to classify this as paranormal but you'll fail. Aside from the prophecy, there just wasn't enough of it to consider it as one. It was heaped in action that you could say it's a thriller and romance all rolled into one captivating package. I can't remember ever reading something as unique and as riveting as this novel.

VERDICT: My one and only complaint is, ironically enough, the very thing that I liked about this novel: the cryptic paranormal plot element. And even now, as I'm writing this review, I can't tell you what the hell this book was about. I think it's brilliant, in such a way that it would leave readers chomping at the bits to read the next one. But it's also frustrating; having to spend a day or two to read a novel, and not having a full understanding of what you've read. Regardless, I ordered my copies of the trilogy last week, and I just got a notification that all will be here by tomorrow. Go me.
