"Thinner" is a gripping thriller/horror book that I enjoyed. Billy makes for an interesting main character and I enjoyed reading about how he tries to get out of the horrible situation he is in.

The book is not "horror" in the sense that it will keep you up all night, so the good news is that it can be a bedtime read too :)

I find it hard to give his books ratings lately but I liked it.

This is a strange thing I've had happening lately - I'm preferring the movie version of a story to its written counterpart. It rarely happens to me!

It was easier to understand with Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redeption because it was only a novella and was able to be expanded upon instead of diminished by Holly wood - as is often the case. But the playwright for Thinner did a fantastic job of making small adjustments and adding a plausible-and-at-the-same-time-unnecessary element with the wife's infidelity to make it a more engaging story, and a slightly more satisfying ending.

Bachman stayed true to Bachman, and left the piece with an unresolved, unfulfilling, and dissonant chord ringing out.

I loved the beginning of the book. It was fast paced, great build up and really made me curious about the main character, Billy. But as the book goes on it really starts to drag, with a lot of unnecessary detail.
I also think that Ginelli kind of pops up out of the blue as such a strong, important character. I don't think he was properly developed. His character seemed a bit 2D to me, which is a shame, he could have been much more interesting because just the concept of his character is very exciting and enticing.
Would have been nice if the whole of the book continued on the way it had started.

Good read. I have only seen the movie previously and as always there were some changes. The book was a better version although I still enjoyed the movie.

This is my first Richard Bachman read.

Writing reviews for average books is hard because I really have nothing to say. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. Thinner is a relatively short book and it took me almost two weeks to finish it. This was the group read of the month for #kingbuddyreads. Participating in the weekly discussions helped me better understand this book and also helped me actually get through it.

The plot was interesting and amusing. I really didn’t have any favorite characters nor did I grow attached to any expect Ginelli. William Halleck was a hard character to like. He didn’t seem to accept the responsibility of running over a woman and killing her. He was grateful for receiving a slap on the wrist and getting away with it. When the gypsy woman’s father curses him, William gets pissed and that just didn’t make sense to me. But that is also what’s wrong with america at the moment (not going to get into politics because I could go on for days).

The story follows William’s journey to get this curse taken off. My issue with William’s need to get this curse taken off was unpredictable. When you are “cursed”, it is not something that can be taken off with the snap of a finger. I mean look at the ending *no spoilers*. He felt victimized because this gypsy man put a curse on him but he did commit a crime and no justice was served. It was the principal. I reasoned more with the gypsy man the entire ride.

With all the moral principles put to the side, the story was entertaining. I just couldn’t get over the white man privilege throughout the entire story. Honestly, the story became more enjoyable towards the end where Ginelli is more involved.
