I liked the book but hated the fact that all women wanted to sleep with the main character, barely even knowing him :/ Maybe it was supposed to be a joke, but it wasn’t funny for me

Everything about this book was perfect except... how all the women were written. I couldn't overlook or justify how wonderful the story was when such a large, irrelevant portion of it was dedicated to degrading and crass descriptions of the women characters.

this is my 4th murakami, and probably my least favorite. i ended up liking it, but it has its faults. mainly it falls into the same trap of being the same narrative as his other books, but less compelling.

I really loved this book, practically got lost in it. I like the mix of reality and fantasy, it all works well in this book. The book is divided into two separate stories, by chapters, and both were enjoyable to read, and the connections throughout the book really added to it. I think my favorite parts were the sections about the Town.
I am thankful for a little push to finally read this one, it was sitting on my shelf for a little while. :)

Fascinating ideas, lots of interesting concepts, but why does he have to write women like that?

The relationship of your consciousnesses — subconscious mind and conscious mind. The author used quite lots of symbolism. For instance, shadow, I think, it symbolises the past. The town symbolises the mind

Maybe my favourite Murakami. If you can overlook the way he writes women, this is a nice enough story.

It could be Murakami, Japanese style or translation, but I didn't like the way the book was written. I didn't mind the confusing and diametrically different storylines and I enjoyed stings of characterisation or details. But the book held me at arms length and I couldn't get into it fully.
