4.0

This hilarious book contains 3 ghost stories told at Gumball and Darwin’s sleepover: “House in the Spooky Graveyard,” “The Microwave that Spawned Unspeakable Evil,” “A Stalker Stalks Among Us, Stalkingly,” plus a bonus fill-in-the-blank story for the reader to write.

The storytelling is full of curious/critical questions by other characters at the sleepover ("Mom, please don’t interrupt my story. You’re killing the mood."), potty humor (They heard a flapping sound. “What was that?” Darwin said. “It’s my butt cheeks quivering with fear!” Gumball said.), and great vocabulary words like derelict, ectoplasm, and halitosis.

The writing in “Gumball’s Ghost Stories” feels very similar to how kids write when they’re given free reign, and I suspect that this book will inspire young audiences to make up their own goofy stories too. Recommended for all ages, though keep in mind that this is a chapter book, so if you have beginning readers you should read it out loud and enjoy it together.
