Not special, but a good light read. If you like Stross's Laundry Files series, you'll like this; and they're different enough not to be digging the same turf.
The plot is fairly strong, the wisecracks good, and Peter's development is credibly drawn. The police procedural parts are believable, with some good practical real-life parts included. We see the problems that authors (and readers) can get into when some characters are, er, older than others.
Just as I was becoming disappointed at, I was pleased by the added detail that .
Not as sure about the Simone-or-Leslie thing, but at his age it's at least plausible.
I've already read #3 but I'll go on to #4 now.

I'm still enjoying the series quite a bit! I think (most of) the newly introduced characters are a great addition, and I think that Peter Grant is a deceptively complicated protagonist so I'm very happy to be on his journey.
But I keep feeling like the construction of the book needs work. And also...you know how in a TV series when an actor gets pregnant but they can't take a hiatus so she appears a lot less frequently, standing behind large pieces of furniture? That's how I felt about Lesley and Nightingale in this one. They were around, but the book neither focused on their recovery, nor skipped time so they could be fully involved in the work again. For a written work, that just felt a little off to me.
