I’m finding more and more that I’m absolutely loving the novels from Anne Calhoun. She’s got a great combination of character, emotion, and smexiness. Alana is just weeks away from leaving Walkers Ford and moving back home to her family. She lives a pretty quiet life but before she goes she wants a chance at unleashing her inner desires with next door neighbor and landlord, chief of police Lucas. Lucas is enjoying small town life in Walkers Ford and after serving in Denver, he is welcoming the slower pace. He left quite a bit in Denver including his desire to form any lasting relationships with woman. When Alana proposes a short term affair it sounds like the best proposal to them. As they explore their desires and Alana’s departure date draws closer they begin to realize distance may not be what they need. Really great emotional story. I can’t wait to pick up more from Ms. Calhoun!

~ 3 Jaded Stars ~

Jaded is my first experience with author Anne Calhoun. I’m not a big contemporary reader. I read mostly PNR or UF, but I felt I needed a break before diving back into my regular reads. I had won Jaded several months ago and felt it was time to check it out.

Jaded was a nice read. It had that sweet little hometown feel to it. The plot was ok. Not eye popping spectacular, but sweet with the cliche of hometown cop and head librarian, which even the main characters acknowledge. At times I did wondered how people new each other, but it did not pull away from the story. Yes, I did’t realize this book was part of a series until I was halfway through it, but oh well it can stand on it’s own.

Alana and Lucas their relationship was lukewarm, not very hot. I was never really taken by Alana and Lucas together. Their relationship starts of with sex and little else, but as they spend more time together it deepens. I liked Lucas the Hometown Cop who was wounded by his ex-wife and past pain caused in his job. Alana I never really got into her. She never could make up her mind on anything, the reasons for her to go back to the family where kind a foolish, and it felt like she was not into the relationship as much as Lucas was. I liked the side characters more then the main ones. I enjoyed the storyline on the teenage kid that Alana helps and Lucas with his cousin. You see that the relationships Lucas and Alana build in there lives/town with others is important to them and helps them both find what they need in each other and themselves.

Jaded was a nice read from my usual. The sweet home town feel and the gradual build up in the relationship’s through out the story were nice and sweet.

Jaded, Walker Ford #2, by Anne Calhoun
Grade: C-

“We’re a cliche”

Lucas Ridgeway left Dever after a tragic accident and returned to be sheriff of Walker Ford, South Dakota. Years later what happened in Denver still has control over his life and things have only gotten worse and made him shut off all of his emotions. When his tenant, Alana Wentworth, who happens to be the town’s librarian, finally acts on the feelings between them Lucas sets out to have a casual, no-strings attached affair. The time these two spend together the more Alana breaks down Lucas’s defenses and opens his eyes to the world he’s been missing.

Alana Wentworth loves being the librarian of Walker Ford but she knows it’s only temporary until she returns to her society life in Chicago. Determined to be different when she goes home, Alana knows she must get Lucas Ridgeway into her bed and is shocked when it finally happens. As their relationship grows Alana has a harder time not getting attached to the people in Walker Ford and their sexy sheriff and she finds herself choosing between her heart and her family duty.

I loved the first book in this series and was so excited to read Jaded. I loved the idea of the sheriff and the librarian but sadly this book just didn’t do it for me. The beginning is amazing and pulls you right in but it fizzles very quickly. I found myself not caring about Lucas or Alana and was much more interested in her sister Freddie. These two just seemed very boring to me and I wanted Alana to stand up for herself a lot more. About halfway through the books picks up again only due to old characters coming back.

The community of Walker Ford kept my attention but there wasn’t enough of it to keep it for long periods of time. I am hoping that the next book, which I hope is Nate’s, will have more the dark passion that Unforgiven had. I really loved that book which is why I’m going to continue on with this series even though Jaded was such a disappointment for me.

This kinda reminds me of KA's Breathe. Town's fav cop hooking up with the librarian.

Anyway, Lucas is hot yes but Alana steals the show for me. SHE IS SO AWESOMEEEEEEE

Had the same feel as Live (Mary Ann Rivers) and is basically a small-town story.

I found the romance between Alana and Lucas rich, both in it's development and in how in played out amongst all the other stuff happening in the plot. It is just the type of intimate, believable relationship, adult that is my favorite. There was a lot of depth to this and I felt like I had gotten a really full story. Something that I find awfully lacking more and more these days.

Really enjoyed this one.

Characters: Librarian, Police chief
World Building: continuing story arc, small town in South Dakota
Plot: library renovation planning, largely internal

Read another: Yes

Although the external plot was minimal, the characters were interesting to me.

This was the first book I read by Anne Calhoun and while it was a nice read, it wasn't a great one. After finishing this book I'm not clamoring to go and get the rest of her books. I found this book to be very enjoyable and fun to read, but I didn't feel very invested in the characters until the last bit of the book and that wasn't enough to get me hooked.
