A small town in France is besieged by the Dead. The inhabitants find themselves locked out of their towns and are completely helpless as how to get back in.
Definitely a parallel to make with the Paris Commune, in this short story published in 1879. I am just not sure how, and how it makes me feel because this is a rather peaceful story, or at least, there’s not much action. Maybe the Occupiers are the dead Communards who were slaughtered when the Versailles government took Paris back. Because, in a Beleaguered City, although it is not clear why or what, the Dead who occupy the town are not destroying anything, they want to teach the inhabitants a lesson - out of love for them. At the end, no one really remembers what they’ve been taught by the occupation of their town and that seems a fitting conclusion for the heritage of the Commune.
This is, nonetheless, a great little story. It is very atmospheric, and I felt part of the village myself.
