Tepid. I tend to find procedurals a little dull, but this tried my patience with repetitive actions and thoughts. I also wasn't wholly satisfied with the explanations at the end; I wanted more thorough exposition of how all of the threads came together. Add in the usual gang of crooks and sensational chapter cliffhangers, and it was--while not terrible--not necessarily one to seek out.

A mostly forgotten Golden Age mystery author, prolific and very popular in her day. An ironmonger's daughter who turned herself into a novelist and moved in literary-feminist circles, which makes it kind of disappointing that the books are, so far, pretty routine stuff. A knack for plotting but the characters are formulaic and it's very posh-male focused with some really hidebound attitudes. A couple of good plot twists and a spectacular WTF moment in this one means I will probably try a couple more.
