first read this in 2018 when i was really bad at reading consistently and therefore never got to book two, decided to re-read this before i finally went on in the series now that i do read consistently.

first off i feel like i have to state the fact that i don’t like sci-fi. at all. if a book is described to me as sci-fi it’s very likely i will not pick it up. but this book is so wonderfully thought out, well written (i love nothing more than books that are written in a style other than just one running text) and such a stupid, great idea, that i can’t help but love it.

i do have to admit that i am a little worried that i will find the following books to not be as great as this, but then again i am really bad at predicting what will happen, which is not something i usually see myself faced with when reading a book series (this is, of course, due to my absolute cluelessness when it comes to this genre).

overall, would i recommend this book to everyone? maybe! if you’re happy to read something outlandish in the best way, do go ahead and give this a go.

Cliffhangers are a marketing ploy for readers to buy the second book..... Yes, the 2nd book is in my basket already..
Neuvel has mixed the search for giant, glowing, alien(?) robot parts with questions such as; if such an artifact is left around the world, who does it belong to in a world where everyone wants to have the highest threat/stance?
I loved the writing style of this as well. The story being delivered over a series of interviews, news articles and journal entries. It made for a really quick, really engaging read.

Not your typical alien/robot story! Told entirely through a compilation of documents - interviews, journal entries, mission logs, etc. - the reader feels almost like a detective piecing together the events surrounding the discovery of stunningly advanced alien technology on Earth. While the format is refreshing and enjoyable, the large time gaps between some of the documents somewhat diminish the scope of the story. There are several strong female characters, and the storyline is engaging. A worthwhile read - I look forward to future installments!

A really good sci-fi yarn. My only quibble with it is that by telling the story through the use of transcripts and diary entries, it creates a distance between the reader and the events, so I didn't connect with the characters as much as I might otherwise have. That aside, I was very intrigued and hooked from page one. I look forward to the second book.

6/3/19 - I finally started reading Waking Gods and partway through decided I needed to reread this one, since I could only vaguely remember the incidents the second book was referencing. So here I am, reading this book again!
