It's a cracking yarn. Written by an English author (afaik) it does an excellent job of taking a particular moment in Irish history, when Hermann Goƫrtz was in Ireland, and turning it into an examination of Irish contradictions, hypocrisy and shifting allegiances. The IRA's past, Nazi sympathies and communist coloured futures suit against Irish government sanctioned murders and spying. From the War of Independence and Civil War to the second world war, the official Irish stance was always an impenetrable mess. This makes it readable.
