How to Be a Hero by Florence Parry Heide, Chuck Groenink

This book actually made me mad. The set up is cute, and engaging, and there are lots of fun allusions to familiar fairy tales. But when the kid gets a chance to be a hero, he is too busy buying a candy bar for himself. He considers himself a hero for being the 10 thousandth customer. And meanwhile, in the background, real heroism is happening. And the book literally says nothing about it. It's there, so you can see it, and I guess it's sort of a conversation piece, but it made me mad.

Totally the way I used to tell fairy tales, until the ending, which is a little morally bleak. Just a little though.

I can see the humor in the ridiculousness of it, and appreciate the allusions to classic fairy tales , but am not sure I like the message.

There is a lot going on in the illustrations that is not in the text. It would make an excellent discussion starter for what really is a hero.

edited to add -- I think the message in the text is NOT what we want students to embody. Since they are often so literal, I would not give this to kids without a discussion afterwards. The intended audience often misses sarcasm.

I really liked this book and it was very funny! A bit too long for storytime.

I think kids would have a good time trying to guess which fairytales Gideon is describing throughout the story.

Themes: heroes, fairytales

I liked the humorous tone and the boy's recounting of various fairy tales, but the ending fell flat.
